Last Friday, we had a planning session for the new EO Argentina 24/25 Board, of which I have the enormous honor and pleasure of being a part. This event not only marked the start of a new cycle but also provided an opportunity to connect, learn, and lay the foundation for what will be a year full of challenges and growth.

A New Board with Great Expectations

This year, Leandro Chennales will serve as the president, and I will be working in the mentorship chair alongside Diego Noriega. It is a privilege for me to work and learn from two people I consider friends and deeply admire. Our chair’s objective will be to add value to EO members through mentorship processes with experienced mentors. These processes will focus on helping them solve challenges and move to the next level:

Now that I'm more relaxed, I'd like to share the takeaways from NY Tech Week. It was a week full of learnings, encounters, and discoveries that left me reflecting on various aspects of the tech and investment ecosystem. From fundraising to the vision of Venture Capitals (VCs) and the role of Latin America (LATAM) in this context, there’s much to unpack and analyze.

In this blog, we'll delve into the key points that emerged during the week, exploring each in more detail and providing a comprehensive view of what's happening in the world of technology and startups. So, without further ado, let's dive into the most relevant topics from NY Tech Week.

Fundraising: A Crucial Topic

Fundraising is a recurring theme at any tech event, and NY Tech Week was no exception. Here are some key points that emerged during the discussions on this topic:

  • On one hand, many entrepreneurs are raising capital, which is good.
  • On the other hand, many Venture Capitals are looking for investments, which is great.
  • The weak point is that there are still many entrepreneurs seeking capital without knowing the "why." This continues to surprise me.

Contextualizing the Vision of VCs

During the week, I had the opportunity to meet with several investors to understand their sharp vision of the industry. Everyone agreed that there will be an improvement towards the end of the year and that we will likely return to normalcy. Yes, normalcy understood as normal and not the craziness that exploded post-pandemic.

The Reality of Fundraising

In the past, I collaborated with many startups that sought funding without any real reason, simply following "The Entrepreneur's Manual." Two things could happen:

  • They didn't raise funds and became frustrated, refused to grow bootstrapped, and shut down.
  • They raised funds but didn't know what to do with the money, burned through it, and shut down.

Feedback on Braintly's Growth

The investors I spoke with gave very good feedback on what we're doing at Braintly in terms of growth (SEO, Content, LinkedIn, Events). Everyone agreed that there will be an improvement towards the end of the year and that we will likely return to normalcy.

The Vision on LATAM

It surprises me to see "WOW" faces when we talk about LATAM. There are several interested in the topic, but they still have a lot to discover. They ask me, "why invest/work with LATAM?"

  • Cultural alignment and our long-term global vision.
  • LATAM has over 40 unicorns; it's the most competitive region in terms of salary and quality in the world.
  • The time zone perfectly matches that of the USA.

Active Ecosystem

The ecosystem is more awake than ever. It's growing by leaps and bounds and is increasingly ambitious in terms of value generation. NY Tech Week proves it: there were over 700 events. Side note: Adam Jones selected us among his 5 favorite events of the week and wrote a lovely review in his substack.

Artificial Intelligence: A Mix of Emotions

Regarding artificial intelligence, there’s a mix of emotions:

  • On one hand, some people are afraid that AI will take their jobs.
  • On the other hand, there are many (really, too many) early-stage startups saying they are doing something with AI.

The Reality of AI in Startups

What I noticed is:

  • First: they're not developing their own machine learning or AI. Most are integrating into existing systems (mainly GPT, of course) and are building a solution based on that.
  • Second: they are in love with that solution, simply because it has AI, and they are not in love with the problem.
